Claude Cahun and Suzanne Malherbe papers, 1913-1952.

The Claude Cahun and Suzanne Malherbe Papers consist of holograph and typescript writings by Cahun; memoirs, correspondence, and notes relating to their experiences during World War II; and a small amount of other correspondence and copies of photographs by Cahun. Writings by Cahun (in box 1) include Amor amicitiae, 1913-1914; Confidence aux miroirs, [1945?]; Lyncanion et Thyrcé, undated, with copies of related letters from André Gide to Marc-Adolphe Guégan, 1924; and excerpts from Héroïnes, [circa 1923-1924]. Papers relating to World War II (in boxes 1-2) include copies of resistance propaganda, undated; letters and notes concerning the imprisonment of Cahun and Malherbe, 1943-1945 and undated; holograph memoir notes by Malherbe, undated; and a typescript memoir by Cahun and Malherbe, undated. Other correspondence (in box 2) includes letters to Cahun and Malherbe from Néoclis Coutouzis and Lilette Richter, 1945-1947 and undated, and a draft of a letter from Cahun to Henri Michaux, 1952. Copies of photographs by Cahun (in box 2), probably made by a former owner of the collection, include self portraits, portraits of Malherbe and Robert Desnos, and views of Jersey.

Claude Cahun, born Lucy Schwob, was a French photographer, artist, and author. Cahun was associated with the Surrealist movement, and her photography and writings addressed issues of gender identity. In 1937 she moved to Jersey in the Channel Islands with her partner Suzanne Malherbe, an illustrator who adopted the name Marcel Moore.
